Occultation of Venus by the moon

An occultation is a phenomenon where one celestial body is being hidden by another. (As in occult= hidden)

Or as Wiki puts it, “an occultation is an event that occurs when one object is hidden by another object that passes between it and the observer”.

Last May 16, 2010, I have missed this rare phenomenon which could be observed only in the Southeast Asian sky.  In the Philippines, to observe it in Luzon sky would have been better.

Last May 16, the moon passed between the Earth and Venus (the brightest “star” you see in the night sky),thereby hiding it and creating an effect which looked like one of the “symbols of Islam”.

star and crescent

One of my professors said that to call the above symbol as a symbol for Islam is wrong. This is only a symbol of the Ottoman Empire which had converted to the religion.

Yun lang.
