Musings on a winter solstice

TWO HOURS AGO, THREE KIDS SANG CHRISTMAS CAROLS OUTSIDE  OUR HOUSE:

Ngayong pasko magniningning ang Pilipino…

(Thoughtspeak: hala ang haba naman nito.)

Saan man sa mundo tanaw nila ang liwanag mo… (end)
Maligayang pasko at manigong bagong taon sa inyo. (repeated 3x)
We wish you a merry christmas, we wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year...

(Thoughtspeak: hahaha! chorus lang pala. ) I was about to get out and give P1 when…

...Ang nagsindi nitong ilaw
Walang iba kundi ikaw
Salamat sa liwanag mo
Muling magkakakulay ang pasko
Salamat sa liwanag mo
Muling magkakakulay ang pasko…
…Dahil ikaw Bro, dahil ikaw Bro
Dahil ikaw Bro
Ang star ng pasko

Lalabas ulit pero…

…celebrating the birth of our savior Jesus Christ
Let love like that starlight on that first Christmas morn
Lead us back to the manger where Christ the child was born
Let’s sing Merry Christmas and a happy holiday
This season may we never forget the love we have for Jesus
Let him be the one to guide us as another new year starts
And may the spirit of Christmas be always in our hearts
We wish you a merry christmas, we wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year…

FINALLY, I went out to give the money.

After the usual “thank you, thank you, ang babait ninyo,” I heard a whisper.

Bata: Tan-awa, P2 ang gihatag kay taas kaayo ato gikanta.  😉

Those kids remind me of the first time I joined caroling. My cousin from Bohol nagged me and my sister to death to join her in singing carols and I told her, ‘Dile ko ate, ok lang man sa imo nga magkanta2x kay dile man sila kaila nimo’. But my sister went out with her so I was compelled to join.

We went to another block  and chose the biggest house; it’s painted white, on the windows were elaborate draperies and we could see through them a huge Christmas tree. A barking dog could also be seen outside.

I forgot the songs we sang but I remember that we were given 45 cents (!) with a 5 cent coin with a hole in it.

I felt bad and went home immediately leaving my sister and my cousin behind. That became my first and last try at caroling.

I have already heard a lot of Christmas carols, seen a lot of  lights and Christmas trees (at a mall and in the plaza), I’ve already shopped for the Noche Buena, I’ve already brought presents for my siblings and myself (Bob Ong‘s Stainless Longganisa and Nick Joaquin‘s Reportage on Crime), I’ve joined the first simbang gabi (I didn’t go again because of the cold), we’ve already started the general cleaning  to prepare for the new year…in short, we’ve already done a lot to make this season a warm one.

But I guess the carols, lights, trees, food failed to warm me.

Is it because of the cold weather? Yesterday is the winter solstice, the time when the earth is farthest from the sun, the coldest and longest night. There’s also a total lunar eclipse which I failed to see because I got busy ranting while cleaning the house until 2am… Surely, the universe has conspired for me to feel cold today.

Is it really the weather or is it just my heart?

This afternoon in the city while I was running to a motorela bound home (we
live in the suburbs), a stranger flagged me down to say hi.

Stranger: Hi! Ikaw man ang ate ni Bella no?
Me: Yeah. Ngano diay?
Stranger: Ako diay iya bf. I’m sorry niuna nakog uli tong birthday dinner ni auntie.
Me: Ahhh, ikaw pala si Jess. Nice meeting you.
Jess: Sige, murag gadali man gud ka…bye te.
Me: Sige, bye! (Wala ata akong nasabi ah. He’ll get a word from me one of these days. Kahit di ko masyadong na-appraise, mukhang harmless naman. I hope.)

There are kids caroling outside minutes ago. I guess they are the same kids because they are singing…

…Ang nagsindi nitong ilaw
Walang iba kundi ikaw
Salamat sa…

(Pause)

Thank you… thank you ang babait ninyo. Thank you!
